The Hate Hate Relationship of People in DC

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

TieIt’s sort of a coincidence that the Metro is talking about seating arrangements of there rail cars because people don’t like to look at each other. At the same time yesterday I started my un-scientific study of saying “Good Morning” to folks on the way to work. I have noticed that not many if none of the people that I pass by actually acknowledge or respond to my “Good Morning.”  I have the big belief that it’s all about the way you dress. For one I am a morning person and like to give a good old “Top of the Morning” salute to people on the street. It’s the right thing to do isn’t it? You never know, you could make that person’s day and by all means not to many people’s days are being made because not many people are saying “Good Morning” to each other.

So, here is how it works. Every Morning on the way to work (I work on Capitol Hill) I will look at everyone that passes by and if they look at me I will give them a good old Top of the Morning. I will count how many responses and how many people beat me to it. On average I pass about 20-30 people at between 7:30 and 8:00am. This week I will wear a tie, which I think is the deciding piece of clothing and next week I will just wear a collared shirt. At the end of next week I will post the results. Maybe even throw in a mixed tie no tie week and see how that factors up. Oh yea, this is only a Monday through Friday sort of deal.

I really do think that there is an unwritten law in DC that says you can only correspond with people that dress like you. We will have to see what the results bring? What do you think? Will the tie win?
