Cleaning up the Backyard

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Looks like more and more people especially the Congress and Senate are noticing that the National Mall, the Nations Backyard is looking pretty shabby these days.  By that I mean it’s falling apart and in need of desperate repair.  An estimate has been released that in order to fix sidewalks, locks, maintenance of grass, signs, fences, and the other responsibilities come with yards, it will cost $350 million.  Funding for the National Park Service is much less than that.  Under the Bush Administration a clear plan was set out for financials but Congress had not followed through.  This year only $24.6 million was set aside for NPS and $27 million in philanthropic contributions. Much less than the Presidents plan to have the NPS at $3 Billion by 2016.  You can read more on this at the Washingtonpost.com.
