Living In The District

Jim Henson’s Fantastic World

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Jim Henson's Fantastic WorldJim Henson’s children have arrived in Washington, DC! From July 12th until October 5th Kermit, Bert and Ernie and the gang will be hanging out at The International Gallery. This exhibit has everything from original puppets including Kermit the Frog, Bert and Ernie, Mahna Mahna and the Snowths and many more characters to original storyboards and concept drafts written on scrap paper. The exhibit is about 5 rooms and only takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Kids will enjoy looking at the puppets which are glass enclosed and at the end will have a chance to try there puppet skills in front of a TV camera. A small souvenir shop awaits on exit where you can purchase DVD’s,  CD’s,  puppets, books and much more.

A cool feature that I have been seeing more and more of is self guided podcast tours. One is available for Jim Henson’s Fantastic World and can be downloaded here. When at the exhibition, just look for the iPod logo next to specific items on display. The entire podcast tour is approximately 38 minutes.

The only two down falls to the exhibit is its location which may be hard to find if you are not familiar with the area, and taking photos.  Photography is strictly prohibited in the exhibit and security is watching you all of the time. If you are carrying a bag it will also need to be searched at the entrance of the gallery.

To find The International Gallery your best bet is to find the Smithsonian Castle Information Center.  Once you find this building, which is not hard, position yourself so that you are facing the main entrance (standing on the National Mall) and look right.  You will see a building that looks sort of like a small silo.  You may have to walk over to the right of the castle to see it.  The exhibit is in that building and underground. This is a must see exhibit in DC and for that reason it is a featured thing to do. Enjoy!
