Railroad Alarm Set Off, No One Seems To Care

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Yesterday on the way home from work at around 4pm as I passed under the I-295 (Southeast Freeway) Bridge and couldn’t help notice an alarm that was going off just in front of the entrance to the train tunnel (Map Location).  The alarm was very loud which repeatedly blared a siren and some type of voice command.  I didn’t think to much about it, just looked at my girlfriend and said…that’s odd.  On my way out of my apartment around 6:35pm that night the alarm was still going and when I came back at 8pm the same thing.  This time I decided to take a little video and catch what the voice commands were saying.

FYI: those railroad tracks do not go to union station or through Capitol Hill.  Here is a map of the tracks.

When I got home I decided to give 311 (non-emergency line) a call and let them know that this alarm has been going off since around 4pm.  Something must be of concern if they put an alarm on the tracks near that tunnel and it was set off.  Obviously no law enforcement agency thought so thus far.  So, on the phone with 311 I told the lady,  who seamed like she could give two shits, that an alarm was going off under the SE free way (she didn’t know what that road was) at the New Jersey Ave SE overpass.  She asked a couple of times where that was and fell silent while I explained that it had been going off for a couple of hours already.  After I finished she abruptly said thanks and hung up….interesting.  My girlfriend and I both decided to take bets on how long it would take someone to show up, but couldn’t since neither of use had differing views.  We both were in agreement that the alarm would still be sounding the next morning when we went to work.  Sure enough this morning on the way to work the alarm was still going off.

It must not be to much of a concern to law enforcement or homeland security that this alarm, at the entrance of a train tunnel, just 500 ft from the Capitol power plant and 3 blocks from the Capitol and other Government Buildings is anything to stress over.  Its’ only a railroad tunnel that runs next to Capitol Hill who could possibly do any damage there.  It’s kind of disheartening that with all the law enforcement in DC the communication between them is awful.  Everyone in this city wants to be the hero and only worries about there agency.  I’m not sure how big a deal this is but it sure is annoying with that alarm going off every 20 seconds.

So, is this a big deal that an alarm has been going off for almost 24 hrs and no one has turned it off or in fact (maybe they have) checked it out?  What would you do?
