Who Stole the Bus Stop?
Monday, October 6, 2008
Recently Metro placed bus stops on Independence Ave next to the Library of Congress on both sides of the street. They dug up the sidewalk, put in footers and put the nice glass bus stops up. Two weeks later they are gone. Anyone know why? What a waste of money.

I’ll ask WMATA and get an answer.
Upcoming inaugural events? Everything around the Capitol is about to become harder to access between now and January 20, 2009. That said, it’s just a guess. I’ll be interested to know what Michael P. finds out.
@Michael P: Thanks would love to find out!
@Janet: I thought the same thing, however they were just put up last month. They had to break up the concert pour the concrete footers and add in the metal forms. then re-pour the sidewalk back and then put up the bus stop. To take them down they did the same thing. I’ll check again today on the way out of work to see if they actually broke the concert up to remove them. I would think, they would have just waited till Feb to do the work. Will be interesting to see what Micheal gets.
Dear Mr. [P]:
Thank you for your October 8, 2008 email message to [name withheld], Public Relations Officer for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro), regarding bus shelters that were recently installed and then removed from Independence Avenue SE, near the Library of Congress.
These structures were not placed by Metro but by the District of Columbia. After they were installed, the District was ordered by the Office of the Architect of the Capitol to remove them because they were on federal property.
Thanks again for your inquiry.
Sincerely,
James J. Hughes

I’ve asked DDOT’s communications office if they have any more information.
Thanks Michael. Good work
I received the following from DDOT’s director of communications:
“DDOT did anticipate installing the new bus shelters at this location. Unfortunately, as WMATA stated, the Architect of the Capitol determined the stations needed to be removed.”
I’ve sent a reply trying to get them to clean up their euphemism that they “anticipated” installing them, as it seems like they got well past that point.
I’m now asking the Architect of the Capitol for more information, including whether DDOT had consulted with AOC before the stop was installed.
