Metro Bus…Is It Safe?

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Yesterday there was another Metro Bus Accident.  This one took place at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 9th Street.  This is the second bus accident in the recent months for Metro.  The first one hit a cab by the State Department which left one person dead.  That bus driver has since been fired.

This brings me to a poll question;

Do you feel safe riding the Metro Bus?

    I remember one day walking by 2nd and East Capitol. A bus took a wrong turn down a road and the Capitol police were asking the bus to back up. The bus backed up right into a car. It pushed the car about 20 feet before the cops were able to tell the police officer to stop.

    As a regular rider of the 30’s routes, my overall sense is that we are safe on the bus. Sure some drivers seem a bit aggressive at times. If one is looking to understand the safety issue for buses – spend a day riding at front of bus so you can watch the crazy S**T the drivers must put up with everyday. And I am not talking about the folks in the bus. Commuter buses from MD, taxis, and folks in a hurry to wait in the next block …

    Sure a bus hits someone/something and the damage is real and significant. What’s amazing to me is they hit so few of the real targets presented to them each day.
