Inauguration Street Vendors, The Problem, The Solution

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

DC Consumer & Regulatory Affairs says that it is going to limit the number of street vendors on inauguration day but are they really going to be successful? DCRA is only going to give out 500 permits 1 day permits to vendors and each vendor can only have three workers which must have an approved FBI background check.  Seems pretty crazy to me to sell a hotdog, camera, or a t-shirt, but think about it, are they really going to be able to limit the number of street vendors.   They may if the vendors are working out of a truck on the side of the road, but what about the guys selling Obama buttons, overpriced Washington Post special edition papers, or those ugly Obama family t-shirts out of their jackets? Oh yeah where can I get my Obamamania shirt, you know kind of like the hulkamania shirts?  Will they be able to stop these people? I don’t think so and I would have to believe that they are the ones that will make the most money from the crowds.

What is the whole goal behind limiting the vendors anyways? Is it to limit the ammount of traffic on the streets or is it a security issue?

If you want to apply for your vendor permit for Inauguration day than fill out your application an hope it gets approved.  Otherwise go the easy route and go to the store and get a trench coat and a suitcase.
