Metro is dealing with budget problems again. There will be major cost reductions coming which could include limited rail service and jobs being cut. Hopefully fares wont be going up again. On Inauguration day Metro is already talking about charging rush hour fares for the whole day. They must pinch out every little penny they can get. Also, on Inauguration day Metro will run 8 car trains during rush hour service that will last for 15 straight hours (4am to 7pm). During that time bikes will not be allowed on trains.

I’m all for WMATA charging rush hour fares on Inauguration Day. So far, the busiest day for the Metro has been 658K passengers. According to the DC Examiner, they expect that the most the Metro could handle in a day is 900K passengers. Having been on the Metro during some of its worst days this summer, I suspect its capacity is closer to 700-800K. Regardless, I don’t want to be anywhere near the Metro if they truly expect to carry more than 1.2M passengers that day.
I’ll be taking the VRE to DC for the week before and the week after the Inauguration. The Metro fails to grasp crowd control or basic system maintenance. VRE might not be much better, but they at least have physical limitations that prevent the sort of “cattle mentality” we see on the Metro.
