So what happens when you don’t have enough police officers for the inauguration? Well you ask other agencies if they can help out. This is exactly what MPD is doing. Today there is an article from Los Angeles, CA about how MPD has asked for the LA Sheriff if they could use 500 officers for the inauguration. This request in return has caused some concern for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Currently the board has approved 112 of the 500 requested officers. The main concern is

Does this idea of shelling out public money for charter air travel and accommodations for 112 deputies from the West Coast make any sense to anyone? The Washington department has agreed to foot the bill for air travel and hotel rooms, but can anyone truly justify this cross-country prestige assignment for scores of deputies?

…”indirect” costs of sending more than a hundred officers would include paying for winter jackets, at $232 each. It’s a good bet that East Coast officers already have winter wear.

Even worse the article goes on to say that the District didn’t even ask NYC for officers.

“The city of New York wasn’t asked by the city of Washington to send any officers,” Yaroslavsky said. “The city of Washington could have saved a half a million dollars in transportation costs by just calling up to New York and having them bus down from New York.”

Why is this! Again we are in a $127 million budget deficit and here is the MPD is going to ask officers from across the country to help with the inauguration and didn’t even ask the biggest city in the United States which is 4 1/2 hours away.

By no means is this a blow to Chief of Police Cathy Lanier. I am a huge fan of her work in the district. However, this is a blow the District for poor planning and money management.

Does anyone know where we can get a list of where officers are coming from and how much money is being spent on this effort? I would hope that at least 80% of the officers that are helping with the inauguration are from surrounding states.
