Living In The District

That’s Not Obama’s Job, That’s the Mayor’s Job!

Tuesday, December 23, 2008

I was appalled when I read the Washington Post today. It seams that whenever someone asks where I live (which is DC) always has a bad impression of the District. Maybe it’s because of previous happenings before I moved here maybe not but, have you ever wondered how DC got a bad rap? Today the Washington Post added to the rap sheet of ones that give DC a bad name.  Read this one paragraph and it sounds like DC is the worst place on earth.  It’s not as bad as this is it?

What about the Washington where schools fester, the cops erect checkpoints worthy of war zones, young men gun each other down and where the bodies of four girls were found in a rowhouse guarded by their mother? An Obama administration can’t work miracles, but local activists are optimistic; they see Obama as one of their own, given his background as a community organizer. [WaPo]

The article is about how Obama can change Washington, DC. I have been hearing about this a lot lately but is that really his Job?  Tommy Wells says this,

“The last eight years, in terms of engagement, D.C. has just been a photo op for the president, or a foil,” says Tommy Wells, a social worker turned D.C. Council member. “I really do believe that I have a partner in the new president, someone who understands what it means to change a city to a safe, healthy place to grow up and grow old in.” [WaPo]

Really? Isn’t the Presidents job to look over the country?  Why don’t we hold the Mayor accountable for activities that happen in DC?  Isn’t that part of his job?  Is the district going to put all the blame on Obama when the crime increases next year?

If you look at what the presidents Job description is it’s as follows: “The Constitution assigns the president two roles: chief executive of the federal government and Commander in Chief of the armed forces.” [scholastic.com]  No where in the Constitution does it say to be the community manager Washington, DC!

Let’s hold our local elected officials responsible for fixing these issues!
