Obama Playing Basketball at the Expense of DC Residents

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

President-Elect Barack Obama played basketball last Sunday at the expense of DC taxpayers. Mayor Fenty had a closed school in NW opened exclusively for Obama so that he could shoot some hoops. No word on how much this cost taxpayers but I’m sure there was some overtime salary paid out even though DC is in a budget shortfall.

My question to Mr. Obama is, You said (in an interview on “This Week” with George Stephanopolous) that you wanted to bridge the gap between the way the two parts of DC live. [See Quote at Politico] Why not go play basketball on a Saturday at a DC Community Center?

    Is that a serious question?

If that happened, you would be blogging about how Obama shut down a DC community center because he wanted to shoot some hoops. Did you see the Obamamobile? You think he is going to just go shoot hoops in the public?

That said, I would hope Obama paid for this.

    Andrew,
“You think he is going to just go shoot hoops in the public?” – That’s the only way you are going to be able to bridge the gap! He already went to Ben’s Chili Bowl and ate out in the Public. Federal Dollars paid for the Obamamobile. Local Tax dollars paid for the Basketball game. and I don’t think that Obama paid for it since Mayor Fenty and Obama are BFF’s

Your whole blog entry is based on this assumption: “Local Tax dollars paid for the Basketball game”. That may be the case, but what is your source?

You should really be blogging about Obama wanting to build a basketball court at the White House. That’s going to cost more taxpayer dollars than having a janitor open a school.

My point is that anywhere Obama goes, he is going to shut it down temporarily:

The resulting press probably helps bridge the gap, so I guess that’s what he needs to do. He’s also probably told locations that can be secured, and locations that he cannot go to. I have no idea about the community centers, but you are right that he should try to use one.

You also have to realize that this guy probably wants some time to relax with his friends without press attention. It’s tough being the “biggest celebrity in the world”.
