Metro Service Cuts Coming

Friday, February 6, 2009

We knew that cuts were coming to Metro but did you think they would cut the service hours or shut down some stations? Metro is facing a $154 million budget gap for fiscal 2010. So in order to save some money and close the gap here are some of the ideas that they have come up with so far.

  1. Shut down weekday service at 10pm.
  2. Cut weekend train service. Most likely this means to Metro will close at midnight
  3. Cut time intervals on rush hour service. No more trains every 3 mins.
  4. Close some stations that aren’t used that often.

There are just a few of the items they are tossing around. Hopefully a fare hike will not happen! On the other hand, taxis are loving the sound of this!

I would be extremely angry over this if the article had not mentioned more than 300 metro jobs being cut. We experienced fair hikes last year only to still have metro personnel lining the platforms and saying that the doors were closing. But now if metro is willing to do their part, I would pay a few more dollars a week to keep the current operations going, as Im already spending between 150 and 175 a month anyways. Rather this than watch metro completely deteriorate like some subway systems have or lose service. I also say close the Archives stop. Or how about increasing the tourist daily passes a little more? :)
