DC Voting Rights: Almost There

Friday, February 27, 2009

The Senate passed the DC Voting rights bill yesterday. Like usually amendments were added to the bill including a ban on the DC gun restrictions. Last night at a press conference, Mayor Fenty and Congresswoman Norton where excited about the vote but had no comment on the possible reversal on DC’s Gun restrictions (a local issue).

So what’s Next? The bill now has to go to the House and most likely will get changed and will have to go to a conference committee. Once the House and the Senate agree on the same bill they both will have to vote on it. Oh yea then it will be off to the supreme court.

The best thing about voting rights? Congresswoman Norton will actually have to run a campaign next election cycle. More people will start running for office and it will get really fun and interesting in DC!

WUSA9.com has a pretty cool time-line of the DC Voting rights issue.

It will be interesting to see how fast the Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional. After all, if it could not survive the Amendment process, what makes anyone think this supposed end-run will work? A better result would be to declare the District a no habitation zone, convert the government to a cabinet level position, level the houses and turn them into parks and federal buildings and have done with it. Problem solved…you can now live in Maryland or Virginia and have all the representation you want.

What I find funny is that EVERYONE who lives in the district KNOWS they have no represenation…so why would they do it? It is not, and never will be a state, at least until someone gets around to actually trying to again amend the Constitution.
